Music Week: Day 2/Album of the Week

Due to the fact that I believe Diddy and I share the same soul, and the fact that I wake up to about 40 unread text messages -like 35 of them coming from him via Twitter- I wanted to use him as inspiration for this week. This has been a really good week for me. Don't know why, just is. Unfortunately, I don't really think Diddy has an album that I believe coincides with this week (or any week for that matter. his shit is just not that good) so....

I mention this album a lot in my everyday life. This was one of the first albums that I really remember connecting with. Not on a content level cause most of the things Biggie spoke about, I was still unaware of. I didn't know crime, poverty, complex music, instant success. A lot of what drew me to this album was that BIG had the ability to rhyme in a way that brought you into his world firsthand along with serious '94 quality beats. On top of that, he's got some really good sampling going on here, lots of old school Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Kool and the Gang, Jackson 5... Every song is different, not very much stays the same and yet, he was always him; honest and true with a sense of like ability that made you want to recommend anything he was dishing out.

I miss the feeling of this, like I mentioned before and that is why I highly advise: if you don't have this album, you deserve a slap in the face and a ride to the nearest record store (not Target, Walmart, nor Best Buy, pleeeease).

Music Week: Day 1

So. My Week of Music. I've been wanting to do this for a long time but wasn't completely sure how to actually put it into words. However, I miss writing and I'm pretty good at it (when I need to be) thus, let's do this...


Monday: Billboards Top Hits of 1985 (The year of my birth. I was there for 19 days)



1985 was on of the "worst" years for music. lol. A lot of classic songs, most of them, I absolutely love(d). Plenty of good bands like The Police, The Go-Gos, Sugarhill Gang, and Devo breaking up (all of which reformed at some point in time). A lot of people still trying to "make it" and even more artists coming about.

Top 5 hits of 1985:

5) Madonna - Into the Groove

Just as an added bonus, I will add that the Number One single on the day of my birth was Broken Wings by Mr. Mister. A couple of my favorite Broadway hits were created/revived this year such as The King and I, Dames at Sea, Singing in the Rain. And A Chorus Line came out on film.


Also, just cause I felt like googling more information than what I had in my head (I remember things according to time, 98% of today's blog came from my brain. Stand up and clap now) a couple artists that I wasn't aware of were born this year.

Album of the Week

I was at a complete loss this week. I don't know what's wrong with me, my brain isn't functioning the way it ought to.

I had so many albums in mind for this week that I couldn't seem to focus on one. I asked for suggestions and nothing came about so I ran to the person that I figured would kind of be on the same wavelength as I. Yes, Mr. C.V. And yes, the inquiry was unsuccessful (sent the text to someone other than him, Oy!) however, I stole him as my inspiration for this Album of the Week without him knowing. Cat's outta the bag now. Jaha!

I don't know if this record was put out as a real attempt towards anything. It's got like 8 songs of which, in my opinion and mine alone, none should get any airplay. And there's no way my parents would have let me buy the cassette when it was released (LP released in early 80s, cassette in early 90s). Check it out.

I'm not going to say I love this album, I'm not even going to hint at you to go find it anywhere. I guess the reason I decided on it was:
A) C.V clearly had a major influence on me and
B) not many people know it's around.

I personally prefer some of Prince's mid 80s albums and don't really like many of his newer ones (Musicology, anyone?? ugh!). He does speak on some "important issues" (I wasn't really aware of political issues in '85, sorry) and still gives you a lil bit of sexy to pound in the sack to.



5 days from now and counting... Hope for my a week long review (business day week, not sure if I have the will power for 7 full days) of music. I've selected a time frame, some top hits and unknown faves to expose.

Life Aint So Bad at All

This morning, I woke up at 4am and decided it would be a grand day for an early morning Beach Run. Got there just before sunrise, my favorite time of day, and headed off. Best day I've had all week...

I'm lowkey throwing in these 2 albums as my faves for the week cause seriously, the beach, in the rain, at sunrise... you can't get anything better than that and these albums went perfectly with my morning.

Anyone that knows me, I guess you'll know right now too, knows that my soul is stuck in 1991-1994 Hip Hop and R&B. I remember being late to school many a time cause I'd wait for the 'Diggin On You' video to play on BET/MTV/The Box. I honestly think it was one of the best times for evolving Urban music. The generation before was the birth/creation process, these few years (and a few later, I'd say til about 97) was when Urban music was evolving and about 98 til now is the result of all that. Def one of my favorite albums, I could listen to this nonstop while cleaning my house *Sexy Time Status* or freakin it up on the floor cause my headboard's too loud. Perf!!

Please Please Please (Fiona reference, anyone??) please go get these albums if you don't have them. No one should go through life without them. Cheers.

Album of the Week

When it came time to consider the album of this week, I was a bit lost. In my mind, it should be U2 because they've got a new album out today and they don't seem to wanna die off anytime soon and I admire that. However, I'm not excited for "No Line on the Horizon". Not really sure why, I'm just not.

It seems that new music is failing us lately. We can't just leave the game up to the few 5-10 artists that still retain quality. I'm going to need something better to come out of the woodwork. Which is where the inspiration for this album of the week came about.

Light Grenades. Not the best album. In most cases, not a very good album. Amazing concert. For seriously, Sheila and I got to see it front row center, one of the best I've ever been to. I decided on this album as the pick of the week mostly because it's one of those things that you know isn't great but it still sounds really good when you're driving around in the middle of the night. It's awesome for that road trip to the beach or the Saturday morning "Clean Your Room" fest. One of those feel good guilty pleasure albums. And maybe Winter 06 was just a really good time in my life cause here we are again. Enjoy.
