Album(s) of the Week

Double Whammy today...

Tom Waits - The Heart of Saturday Night
Released 1974 [Vinyl]

1. New Coat Of Paint
2. San Diego Serenade
3. Semi Suite
4. Shiver Me Timbers
5. Diamonds On My Windshield
6. The Heart Of Saturday Night
7. Fumblin' With The Blues
8. Please Call Me, Baby
9. Depot, Depot
10. Drunk On The Moon
11. The Ghosts Of Saturday Night [After Hours at Napoleone's Pizza House]

Love Tom Waits. Fairly new in my love for him. Always heard of him, never really got into him til about 2004 when a good friend, Mr. BMore, introduced me to 2 of his songs of which, I still listen to every single day (wake up to Alice every morning, Blue Valentine at night).

Legendary. Good shit. I can't even put into words why he is as good as he is. Blame God for being as great as he is and producing this man. If you can get your hands on ANYTHING by Mr. Tom Waits, take it and run fast with it. You will not be disappointed.

(here you get to see how crazy my mind works)
'Diamonds on My Windshield' lead me to thinking of "Diamonds on my neck, diamonds on my grill..." from 'Bossy' which then lead me to this:

Kelis - Wanderland
Released only in the UK
November 5, 2001

1. Intro
2. Young, Fresh N' New
3. Flash Back
4. Popular Thug
5. Daddy
6. Scared Money
7. Shooting Stars
8. Digital World
9. Perfect Day
10. Easy Come, Easy Go
11. Junkie
12. Get Even
13. Mr. U.F.O. Man
14. Little Suzie

This album came out when I was in my "I'm over fake artists" phase. I love Kelis. I love almost everything she does. And yes, this album is beyond good however, I was starting to hate on her for being "fake" as I called it. I don't like when good artists do things just to make a quick buck. Like when Beyonce took Sasha off her "Beautiful Liar" song and put Shakira on it (I am Shakira's number one fan and always will be but, come on, now). Or when Jay-Z did that album with Linkin Park. They made almost all new music, he took the Black Album and spit his old rhymes on it. Or here, for instance, Kelis originally had The Clipse on Popular Thug. Then she married Nas, took Clipse off the track, and put Nas on it. Song was much better without him but was released in the US to help blow up the Kelis and Nas affair. I could go on for days about this but, I won't.

So yeah, I was a hater. Still am somewhat but, I will always stay true to Kelis cause she actually has talent and I love that she's putting herself out there for all of us to admire. If you can find this album anywhere, I suggest you get it.

Love and then some.

Can't Wait For Tuesday to Come

I was going to wait til tomorrow to post these fellas as the album of the week but, I can't help myself. Enjoy.

Simple Citizens - Early Morning
Released December 11, 2008

I don't have a list of the songs because
a) I can't find my CD
b) I can't remember them all (sorry to let you down)
c) The internet is failing me now

These guys right here. First off, you MUST see them live. Definitely a show you don't want to miss out on. Live band, true hip hop. Something to groove to, something to move to, something that moves you. They've got it all. Even if you're one that doesn't much like to step out of their comfort zone, I suggest you try Simple Citizens. It's amazing to see a group lay down the hip hop, funk, reggae, and more while accompanied on stage with a band featuring a Trumpet as well as an Upright Bass. Live music is my love and as highly as I think of them now, I have no doubt these guys will be HUGE one day.

You can get the album on iTunes now or if you click the album above you can buy the CD and/or Vinyl directly from their site.

For all of you out here in the SFV, they have a FREE live show every first Thursday of the month (excluding this Thursday so, I'll see you all there May 7th) at the Scotland Yard pub half a block West of the corner of Sherman Way and Topanga. Check out their site for more info.

Cheers and Good day to you all.

Tonight Tonight

$5 Footlong to the first person that can tell me the name of the band from which my subject matter was stolen.

On to the point. THIS is where me and a few of my people will be this evening. THIS is where you should be as well. One of the most amazing experiences I've ever had (amongst the new Prince album and some very skilled new "friends").

Oh Snap

Amongst all the madness going on this weekend (Can everyone just stop being born/playing shows this week, puhleease?!) there is one thing, and ONE thing only that I'm uber excited for....

Prince - Lotus Flow3r
March 29, 2009

This 3 disc album is ONLY being released through Target stores this coming Sunday. If my job here in Cali would stop sending my paycheck to Dallas, I'd be in line first thing. (chances are, me and my savings account will be there buying this and everything else either way).

Ok so, 3 disc set; 2 from Prince (Lotus Flow3r and MPLSound) and the third from a new artist under him, Bria Valente (album's called Elixer). This chick right here. Oh em gee. Not even lowkey, I'm really on this girl's jock right now. Absolutely love her and what bit I've gotten my hands on (my Pimp Game point status +5). I'm sure I'll go into detailed review after I've spent a week listening to it nonstop like what it do.

If you've got $12 and some common sense, go cop this ASAP as possible (copyrights to The Great).

I'll see you in line.

Blog Overload

I had a lot of free time today after being so busy this past week so this is how I spent at least 3 hours of my day (usually takes me this long to watch a movie cause I can't sit still so I pause a lot).

[Berry Gordy's] The Last Dragon
"Released" March 22, 1985

Written by Louis Venosta
Directed by Michael Schultz
Taimak plays Leroy Green, a.k.a. Bruce Leroy (main character)

One of my favorite movies ever. And I'm sure it's Kanye's favorite too since he has publicly trademarked the "Sho'Nuff" glasses as his own idea.

Julius Carry III aka Sho'Nuff
March 12, 1952 - August 19, 2008

And thanks to my job, I am a fake fan of the Zac Efron so here's where me and my amazing coworkers will be on the 17th

17 Again Starring Zac Efron

You all enjoy your night.

Album of the Week

Here we go again.

Not much introduction needed... Straight out of Cleveland, we can all thank Eazy-E for this one.

Bone Thugs N Harmony - E 1999 Eternal
Released July 25, 1995
(some sources will tell you different. I know I'm right)

3. Eternal
4. Crept and We Came
5. Down '71 (The Getaway)
6. Mr. Bill Collector
7. Budsmokers Only
8. Crossroads
9. Me Killa
10. Land of Tha Heartless
'11. No Shorts, No Losses
12. 1st of tha Month
13. Buddah Lovaz
14. Die Die Die
15. Mr. Ouija 2
16. Mo' Murda
17. Shotz to Tha Double Glock

Ok. So Bone Thugs. Hands down one of my favorite artists to date. Ever since Creepin on ah Come Up, I've been hooked. I seriously thought these dudes were from like the LBC from they swag and whatnot pero, no. Muthafuckin Ohio. (took me almost 2 weeks to figure that one out, we were on the dial-up then) I'm pretty sure 'Thuggish Ruggish Bone' and 'Foe tha Love of $' was on every one's top of the list til this album came out. Clearly the singles, Crossroads (which hit #1 on the Billboard Charts in '97), and 1st of tha Month were incredibly successful. I've listened to 1st of tha Month on every 1st of the Month since 99. Holler. BTNH is one of those groups that I'm actually glad wasn't too successful after their "fall out". It makes me appreciate the things they did when they were really on their grind. These guys really were effing amazing. Not one of their albums would be considered a wash in my book.

We all know this was a good album, not just cause of the singles but also cause Bone made it ok to talk about things people shy away from. I'm not going to throw my religious beliefs and politic with anyone right now but, go ponder this album. You'll thank me for it.

ALSO!!!!

10. Hey Girl ft. T-Pain & Lil Jon
11. Alienated
12. Tell Him the Truth
13. Change Me ft. Akon
14. Energy
15. Where Did He Go

Please support this chick. She's actually one of the "good ones". I've heard quite a bit of this album and as critical as I am, I really do like it. I got high hopes for this girl. And I've been told she's really amazing live. Bunch of good people featured (and really, where the eff has Trina been cause I'm lowkey diggin her on this one). Go buy it now. Or this week. Get her first week's sales up in the charts. Holler.

My Sincerest Apologies.

First, to the family and friends and admirers of Natasha Richardson

May 11, 1963 - March 18, 2009

I will never be able to watch The Parent Trap the same way again AND, I have also recently become an advocate for amfAR (as well as Women's Heart Health) because of this woman. I don't like to say RIP cause in my mind, no soul can rest after life here so, God Bless her.

My apologies also go out to you all. Apparently I wiped out Thursday's 6 Degrees of Separation Post for Music Week as well as Friday's Up and Coming Artists/Weekend Events piece. I didn't realize until now that they weren't posted. I wrote them up on Wednesday, saved them, now they're gone and it's been a crazy ass weekend. I totes promise to get you those as soon as I can.

In other news, a friend of a friend that happens to be a really good beatboxer (I seriously love the people I know. Everyone is so amazing) and is opening up for Joe Budden and Too Short, I believe. This Saturday, Huntington Beach. More info + a flyer to come as soon as Neil gets his A-Game on.

Cheers and Love and a pic of my coworkers at Mikey's Return Dinner.

PS: Mexicali is so so good. Margatinis on deck. Verrrry niiiice.

Music Week: Day 3

So, it's a little lame and a little il-contented (I just made that up, don't know if it's a real word) but, I wanted to post what I think is one of my favorite music videos. Unfortunately, my illegally downloading system failed me (My number 1 pick was Michael Jackson and Eddie Murphy's 'What's Up') so here's my number 2 pick. Enjoy!

Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity

Also, if any of you have got some free time and a good ear, check out my boys FOZZYS HERO this friday night. In the meantime, go request 'Killing Me Inside' on KROQ. Cheers!!

Mis-Conceptions

I've been through a lot these past couple years. And though I can't explain fully now I will say this...

I am a good person. A really good one.. One of the best. It's been confirmed besides my "conceitedness". And it feels good.

Zu. Spring. Sunnyshine. I love you, mijas.
~Puddle

That is all...

Music Week: Day 2/Album of the Week

Due to the fact that I believe Diddy and I share the same soul, and the fact that I wake up to about 40 unread text messages -like 35 of them coming from him via Twitter- I wanted to use him as inspiration for this week. This has been a really good week for me. Don't know why, just is. Unfortunately, I don't really think Diddy has an album that I believe coincides with this week (or any week for that matter. his shit is just not that good) so....

Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
Released September 13, 1994

1. Intro
2. Things Done Changed
3. Gimmie The Loot
4. Machine Gun Funk
5. Warning
6. Ready To Die
7. One More Chance
8. Fuck Me
9. The What
10. Juicy
11. Everyday Struggles
12. Me & My Bitch
13. Big Poppa
14. Respect
15. Friend Of Mine
16. Unbelievable
17. Suicidal Thoughts

I mention this album a lot in my everyday life. This was one of the first albums that I really remember connecting with. Not on a content level cause most of the things Biggie spoke about, I was still unaware of. I didn't know crime, poverty, complex music, instant success. A lot of what drew me to this album was that BIG had the ability to rhyme in a way that brought you into his world firsthand along with serious '94 quality beats. On top of that, he's got some really good sampling going on here, lots of old school Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Kool and the Gang, Jackson 5... Every song is different, not very much stays the same and yet, he was always him; honest and true with a sense of like ability that made you want to recommend anything he was dishing out.

I miss the feeling of this, like I mentioned before and that is why I highly advise: if you don't have this album, you deserve a slap in the face and a ride to the nearest record store (not Target, Walmart, nor Best Buy, pleeeease).

Salutations.

Music Week: Day 1

So. My Week of Music. I've been wanting to do this for a long time but wasn't completely sure how to actually put it into words. However, I miss writing and I'm pretty good at it (when I need to be) thus, let's do this...

Monday: Billboards Top Hits of 1985 (The year of my birth. I was there for 19 days)

1985 was on of the "worst" years for music. lol. A lot of classic songs, most of them, I absolutely love(d). Plenty of good bands like The Police, The Go-Gos, Sugarhill Gang, and Devo breaking up (all of which reformed at some point in time). A lot of people still trying to "make it" and even more artists coming about.

Top 5 hits of 1985:
1) We Are the World - USA for Africa
2) A-Ha - Take on Me
3) Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is
4) Tears For Fears - Shout
5) Madonna - Into the Groove

Just as an added bonus, I will add that the Number One single on the day of my birth was Broken Wings by Mr. Mister. A couple of my favorite Broadway hits were created/revived this year such as The King and I, Dames at Sea, Singing in the Rain. And A Chorus Line came out on film.

Also, just cause I felt like googling more information than what I had in my head (I remember things according to time, 98% of today's blog came from my brain. Stand up and clap now) a couple artists that I wasn't aware of were born this year.

February 20 - Yulia Volkova of t.A.T.u.
April 3 - Leona Lewis
May 10 - Ashley Poole of Dream
July 17 - Tom Fletcher of McFLY
August 3 - Holly Arnstein of Dream
September 23 - Diana Ortiz of Dream
October 25 - Ciara
December 10 - Raven-Symoné
December 23 - Harry Judd of McFLY

I guess I could've thought this out better and written it more "profoundly" but, I'm in a rush. It's Road Trip night. Cheers, folks!

Album of the Week

I was at a complete loss this week. I don't know what's wrong with me, my brain isn't functioning the way it ought to.

I had so many albums in mind for this week that I couldn't seem to focus on one. I asked for suggestions and nothing came about so I ran to the person that I figured would kind of be on the same wavelength as I. Yes, Mr. C.V. And yes, the inquiry was unsuccessful (sent the text to someone other than him, Oy!) however, I stole him as my inspiration for this Album of the Week without him knowing. Cat's outta the bag now. Jaha!

I don't know if this record was put out as a real attempt towards anything. It's got like 8 songs of which, in my opinion and mine alone, none should get any airplay. And there's no way my parents would have let me buy the cassette when it was released (LP released in early 80s, cassette in early 90s). Check it out.

Prince - Controversy
LP Released November 1981
Cassette/CD Released October 25, 1990

1. Controversy
2. Sexuality
3. Do Me, Baby
4. Private Joy
5. Ronnie, Talk To Russia
6. Let's Work
7. Annie Christian
8. Jack U Off

I'm not going to say I love this album, I'm not even going to hint at you to go find it anywhere. I guess the reason I decided on it was:
A) C.V clearly had a major influence on me and
B) not many people know it's around.

I personally prefer some of Prince's mid 80s albums and don't really like many of his newer ones (Musicology, anyone?? ugh!). He does speak on some "important issues" (I wasn't really aware of political issues in '85, sorry) and still gives you a lil bit of sexy to pound in the sack to.

5 days from now and counting... Hope for my a week long review (business day week, not sure if I have the will power for 7 full days) of music. I've selected a time frame, some top hits and unknown faves to expose.

Who's excited? I'm excited. You are too. Holler.

Sunday, March 8, 2009

Oh Yeeeah.

No more bullshit...

Now's the time.
get ready, bitches. I'm comin.

Life Aint So Bad at All

This morning, I woke up at 4am and decided it would be a grand day for an early morning Beach Run. Got there just before sunrise, my favorite time of day, and headed off. Best day I've had all week...

I'm lowkey throwing in these 2 albums as my faves for the week cause seriously, the beach, in the rain, at sunrise... you can't get anything better than that and these albums went perfectly with my morning.

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall
LP Released... I wanna say mid 1979. I don't know, I wasn't there but mos def in 79

1. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
2. Rock With You
3. Working Day and Night
4. Get on the Floor
5. Off the Wall
6. Girlfriend
7. She's Out of My Life
8. I Can't Help It
9. It's the Falling in Love
10. Burn This Disco Out

You can't go wrong with songs like 'Girlfriend' written by one of the best, Mr. Paul McCartney. And 'She's Out of My Life' by Stevie effing Wonder. So so so so good. If someone would just play 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' at the club, just once. I think I'd lose my flippin mind.

TLC - CrazySexyCool
Released November 15, 1994

1. Intro-Lude
2. Creep
3. Kick Your Game
4. Diggin' On You
5. Case Of The Fake People
6. CrazySexyCool-Interlude
7. Red Light Special
8. Waterfalls
9. Intermission-Lude
10. Let's Do it Again
11. If I Was Your Girlfriend
12. Sexy-Interlude
13. Take Our Time
14. Can I Get A Witness-Interlude
15. Switch
16. Sumthin' Wicked This Way Comes

Anyone that knows me, I guess you'll know right now too, knows that my soul is stuck in 1991-1994 Hip Hop and R&B. I remember being late to school many a time cause I'd wait for the 'Diggin On You' video to play on BET/MTV/The Box. I honestly think it was one of the best times for evolving Urban music. The generation before was the birth/creation process, these few years (and a few later, I'd say til about 97) was when Urban music was evolving and about 98 til now is the result of all that. Def one of my favorite albums, I could listen to this nonstop while cleaning my house *Sexy Time Status* or freakin it up on the floor cause my headboard's too loud. Perf!!

Please Please Please (Fiona reference, anyone??) please go get these albums if you don't have them. No one should go through life without them. Cheers.

Album of the Week

When it came time to consider the album of this week, I was a bit lost. In my mind, it should be U2 because they've got a new album out today and they don't seem to wanna die off anytime soon and I admire that. However, I'm not excited for "No Line on the Horizon". Not really sure why, I'm just not.

It seems that new music is failing us lately. We can't just leave the game up to the few 5-10 artists that still retain quality. I'm going to need something better to come out of the woodwork. Which is where the inspiration for this album of the week came about.

Light Grenades. Not the best album. In most cases, not a very good album. Amazing concert. For seriously, Sheila and I got to see it front row center, one of the best I've ever been to. I decided on this album as the pick of the week mostly because it's one of those things that you know isn't great but it still sounds really good when you're driving around in the middle of the night. It's awesome for that road trip to the beach or the Saturday morning "Clean Your Room" fest. One of those feel good guilty pleasure albums. And maybe Winter 06 was just a really good time in my life cause here we are again. Enjoy.

Incubus - Light Grenades
Released November 28, 2006

1. Quicksand
2. A Kiss To Send Us Off
3. Dig
4. Anna Molly
5. Love Hurts
6. Light Grenades
7. Earth To Bella (Part I)
8. Oil And Water
9. Diamonds And Coal
10. Rogues
11. Paper Shoes
12. Pendulous Threads
13. Earth To Bella (Part II)

Just a heads up, I think # 5 (Love Hurts) is probably one of the worst songs ever written by this band. Also... I remixed Earth to Bella (both parts; mixed then combined) for one of my music classes and I must say, that shit was pretty hot. If you don't have this album, please go get it. Or burn it from a friend. Or illegally download it. Whatever, give it a try.
